Material Design

In the TESOL MA program, I had focused on courses dealing with issues and theories related with young learners. I was able to create a storybook for children aged 7 to 9 in Techniques Working with 12s and Under class. I also worked with a colleague to develop a writing exercise application for young learners in Curricula and Materials Development class. Furthermore, I designed worksheet for activities or exercises when I taught kindergarten learners.

Storybook, "Say, Hi!"

written & illustrated by Yuri Ahn in 2015

The number of multicultural families has increased in Korea, however, many people are still not familiar with other races since Korea had been a racially homogeneous nation for a long time. This fact has also affected children's perception about people from different cultural background.

I hope the storybook, "Say, Hi!" helps children in Korea raise their awareness about and understand other ethnic groups. Through the book, young readers are able to see not only differences but also similarities between themselves and children from different cultural background. They are also able to notice that it is not difficult to help a friend to be felt welcomed and adapt the new environment. All they have to do is saying 'Hi!'.

In addition, the book contains short and repetitive sentences supporting young readers' comprehension. It also exposes young readers to simple past tense and comparative expressions.

Application, "Moody Diary"

designed by Yuri Ahn & Kay Oh in 2016

Many young learners struggle with structures in English when they start to learn composition and consider writing as one of the most difficult activities. In Korea, as young learners reach a certain age, they are suddenly expected to produce compositions like journals or essays without enough exposure and proper practices. Considering the fact, the application, Moody Diary has designed for beginner writers and it allows them to experience the structure of a sentence as well as the structure of an essay.

Learners are able to practice the basic structures of English under the children-friendly environment through the application. The young learners nowadays are familiar with technology and are interested with it so the application allows them to enjoy learning as they build interesting stories through the application.

Worksheet for "Oxford Show & Tell"

designed by Yuri Ahn in 2016

While teaching very young learners in a kindergarten in Gimpo, I needed to develop supportive materials for the main textbook, Show & Tell published by Oxford. I also created additional worksheet for the activities done in class. All materials were made to elicit the target language from the learners as they worked on the worksheet. Some of the examples of the materials are shown in the slides on the left.
